The Boston Globe has an interview with the noted artist John Gurche: “John Gurche, hominid sculptor”.
You have to get the feeling that someone is home, that there is somebody in there. If not, I havent succeededIve created a dead anatomical model. This can lead to odd momentsIll be sitting there taking notes, then look up and this thing is watching me.
Gurche’s new book is titled, Shaping Humanity: How Science, Art, and Imagination Help Us Understand Our Origins, and describes his artistic process – including the creation of sculpted hominins for the current exhibit at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC.
